Soprema Sopralene Flam 250: SBS-Modified Bitumen Torch-Applied Membrane Specs & Wind Uplift

Published: 2026-06-22

Soprema Sopralene Flam 250 is a premium SBS-modified bitumen cap sheet designed for torch application on low-slope commercial roofs. The SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) polymer modification provides rubber-like elasticity that pure asphalt membranes lack — critical for thermal cycling and building movement. Soprema is the world's largest modified bitumen manufacturer (French-based), and Sopralene is their flagship North American product line. The Flam 250 designation: 2.5mm thickness with torch-applied installation. Suitable for new construction and recover applications over existing BUR or modified bitumen roofs.

🛡️ Insurance & Compliance Advisory

SBS-modified bitumen membranes are classified differently from single-ply membranes for insurance purposes. They are considered 'built-up roofing' (BUR) and have separate wind uplift and fire rating test standards (FM 4470 for modified bitumen vs FM 4474 for single-ply). When filing claims, specify the FM 4470 classification — adjusters unfamiliar with modified bitumen may incorrectly apply single-ply standards. For hail claims: granule-surfaced modified bitumen has significantly better impact resistance than smooth-surfaced — document your specific surfacing type.
